Want to learn more about fuel savings? Read on for more information on EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. We’re here to help, whether you’re wondering which of these efficient options is right for you or how a particular hybrid or EV model stacks up against its gas-powered equivalent. Our article selection also offers the latest information on popular EVs and hybrids.

Ultimately, we’re here to help you decide which model belongs in your driveway! On the other hand, if you already know what you want from a thrifty daily driver, you can skip ahead to our inventory section below.

Key Takeaways

Pumping Gas
  • If you want to skip the gas station altogether, you need an EV. These vehicles run on battery alone, but their batteries need to be recharged every few hundred miles or so, though battery range varies from model to model.
  • Hybrids and plug-in hybrids combine a gas-powered engine with a battery-powered motor, reducing your footprint compared to a regular gas-powered model.
  • Then there are gas-powered vehicles, which utilize an internal combustion engine (ICE) to generate power. Although they’re not as thrifty as hybrids or EVs, automakers have made major strides in balancing power with fuel economy in recent years.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Charging Vehicle

An EV is any vehicle that runs on battery power alone, without any gasoline whatsoever. Instead of an engine, EVs feature powerful lithium-ion batteries that need to be recharged periodically.

Modern EV batteries can deliver incredible power. For instance, the upcoming 2024 Charger EV will provide up to 590 horsepower! While recharging your EV isn’t as quick and easy as filling up a gas tank, most modern EVs offer DC fast charging equipment. Charge times will vary from model to model, but you should be able to refill your battery with 10 miles of range for every 1 minute of DC fast charging!

Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids

2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid

Classic hybrids pair a gas-powered engine with a battery-powered motor. With this type of vehicle, you do not need to recharge the motor battery. That makes a hybrid a great choice for anyone who wants a thrifty ride that’s also very convenient. Of course, you do still need to fill up the gas tank, but your engine won’t require as much fuel as usual, thanks to the extra power boost you get from the motor.

With a plug-in hybrid, you get basically the same setup: a internal-combustion engine paired with a battery-powered motor. As the name suggests, though, you’ll need to plug this car in to recharge the motor battery. Plug-in hybrids typically offer improved efficiency over their hybrid counterparts, but you will need to take the additional step of remembering to charge up your battery to enjoy these benefits. When a plug-in hybrid’s rechargeable battery runs out of juice, it simply switches into gas mode, continuing on its way using only the engine.

Gas-Powered Vehicles

With the rise of EVs and more efficient options, the classic internal-combustion engine (ICE) may be on its way out. However, it’ll be a while before gas-powered vehicles are completely phased out of production.

The appeal of a gas-powered vehicle is pretty obvious! Not only can you refuel just about anywhere, but doing so is quick and easy. You’ll never need to worry about recharging any batteries. These days, there even are quite a few gas-powered models on the market designed to maximize efficiency! Look for a turbocharged powertrain for a great balance of power and fuel economy.

Make the Right Choice

If you’re able to charge your vehicle at home, an EV or plug-in hybrid will help you maximize your overall efficiency. However, a classic hybrid is also a great choice if you want to conserve fuel without having to worry about recharging your vehicle. And, if you can’t find a hybrid or EV that suits your needs, there are many gas-powered vehicles that can help you save at the pump!
